A group of seven alleged individuals of Germany's far-left group stand trial over series of attacks

A group of seven people accused of being the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network began their trial on this week, facing charges for violent actions against far-right activists that resulted in the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

International terror listing and legal charges

Recently, the US government designated the organization as a terrorist group together with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany claim the group was responsible for targeting locations in the country and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are said to have employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some severely injured.

Court proceedings and international connections

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G. and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in Budapest during February 2023, around an annual event called the “day of honor” that draws far-right participants from across Europe.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T, is facing trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted assault against neo-Nazis prior to the same rally in 2023.

Historical background and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has long been a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a high-ranking member within the organization, tasked with organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M., he is accused of organizing instruction courses where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. At depots managed by Paul M, the group reportedly stockpiled hammers, pepper spray, disguises and communication devices.

Previous convictions and international reactions

A different activist formerly involved with the organization, Lina E., emerged as a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation makes group members ineligible to enter the United States, freezes any assets they could possess within the American economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.

Germany's far-right AfD party welcomed the US decision and urged the government in Berlin to take similar action. However, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The threat from the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have already been convicted or remain detained.”
