When Swimmers Escaped Attack, Viral Image Captures Rescuer Dashing ‘Full Speed’ To the Location.

Alexandra Ching, a permanent resident of Bondi, views the iconic beach as her back yard. On a recent weekend evening, she, similar to other others in the area, detected loud noises ringing out across the community.

“Everyone did, but I thought it was daylight and you couldn't spot any lights,” Ching states. Exiting her residence, she witnessed people “pouring up Bondi Road”. The looks on display made it clear a crisis was unfolding.

As she stood on the street, conversing with a couple who had rushed up the incline soaked, she became aware of someone approaching from behind. This turned out to be a rescuer, running at full speed to Bondi barefoot from the nearby Tamarama beach – about 1.5km – while transporting a life-saving kit.

“I heard someone say ‘excuse me’, and turning my head I spotted this blur of blue,” she recalls. “He was just flying past. It was just him heading in the opposite way that all the others was trying to get away from, while holding that big kit and without footwear … He moved at something that undoubtedly every fibre in your being would tell you to move in the reverse way.

“Absolutely no pause, but just totally pedal to the metal running.”

A Symbol of Bravery Amidst Crisis

The photograph that Ching snapped of the lifeguard, now known to be Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as one of many moments of valour in the wake of the terror attack.

Andy Reid, another lifeguard, noted that Doolan, referred to as “Jacko”, sprinted from Tamarama beach to assist the other members at Bondi, as well as to aid surf lifesavers, officers and paramedics treating many those hurt.

Community Outpouring and Assistance

Doolan’s story was just one of many to come out of the neighbourhood, with the lifeguard clubhouse beside the site of the violence serving as a impromptu treatment center. Reports indicate that colleagues were also seen taking action, including going into the water to save people who were struggling.

After the attack, messages of support circulated widely. An online statement expressed appreciation for the individuals who showed that “kindness will always triumph over evil”.

The group of beach patrol published a message, saying they were “coming to terms with what occurred”.

“Thank you all for your thoughtful messages and solidarity. We are touched by the kindness shown towards our personnel,” the group stated. “Eventually, we will recount our experiences in the hope that it aids those affected.”

Local Government Commendation

Waverley council, the governing body that hires many full-time lifeguards, stated that the staff performed exceptionally from the moment the violence started through to late that night.

“People have shared so many powerful accounts, but the popular picture of Jackson Doolan, sprinting from Tamarama to Bondi with a medical device so he could help assist the injured is remarkable,” said a council representative.

“These individuals exhibit dedication every day in maintaining the safety of our internationally renowned coastlines protected for the public, but what we observed on that day should be commended.

“As we grieve and process the atrocity of this violent and horrific act of violence, I think it is vital that we consider just how much light we have witnessed in the midst of such darkness.”
